What to Wear in South Beach

Miami’s reputation as the King of spring break still holds strong as thousands of college students flock to the Florida city each year.  White-sand beaches, sunshine and the nonstop nightlife attract these stressed-out young adults.  Miami’s trendy South Beach is catering more and more to students with hotels and hostels at affordable prices.

South Beach, or SoBe, is Miami’s hippest hot spot. The vibrant area, with its packed nightclubs, pastel-hued buildings, chic shops and exclusive restaurants, attracts celebrities and socialites year-round.  The historic Art Deco District and Haulover Beach (the city’s only nude beach) are other attractions.  Spend some time in SoBe’s cool bars because, in Miami things start to heat up when the sun goes down.

To pack for Miami, you really only need a few items: a bunch of dresses, two bikinis, some heels and sandals, a pair of designer shades, and a purse to hold all the essentials.  Here are my suggestions for a fashionable spring break:

These patterned dresses are perfect for a daytime look.  You can throw them over your swimsuit after lounging at the beach, or wear them while you eat lunch and check out the shopping in Miami.  From left to right: Billabong – $42, Diesel – $94, Desigual $149.

Flashy dresses will help you stand out in any Miami nightclub.  Since these dresses are already brightly colored and embellished, there is no need for you to worry about wearing extra jewelry.  From left to right: ABS by Allen Schwartz – $95, French Connection – $180, Rebecca Minkoff – $230.

These teeny bikinis come in spring colors and for a different look – you can mix and match the tops and bottoms.  From left to right: Chiarugi – $128, Vanda Catucci – $139.

You can relax in a pair of strappy sandals at the pool and by the beach.  But while strutting around town, make sure to rock a pair of stacked wedges or heels.  From left to right: Maliparmi – $88, Laura Biagiotti – $66, Espadrilles – $95, GUESS – $124.

This black pair of Yves Saint Laurent sunglasses are reminicent of the old-school Hollywood glamor.  The basic shape of the plastic frames could flatter anyone’s face.  Gold accents on the hinges and ombre lens make the shades pop.  Yves Saint Laurent Variation – $240.

This bold cross-body bag will complete any outfit in Miami.  The gold zippers and studding make this purse a hot conversation piece.  The quality leather and construction of the bag makes it an affordable luxury item.  JC de Castelbajac – $125.
