Fitness Fashion Pilates

Everyone knows that looking good and feeling good usually go hand in hand. Among the best ways to stay physically fit is enrolling in a group fitness program at your local gym. But how do you know which class is right for you? Each week New York Girl Style will be profiling one growing fitness trend, giving the girl on the go the lowdown on each exercise option. This week: Pilates.

What it is: Pilates is a system of strength training and stretching that uses various props and apparatuses to develop physical fitness. By using items such as weights, exercise balls and resistance bands, Pilates aims to increase fitness level through resistance training.

What it does: Pilates focuses on increasing strength in your core, so expect an increase in the tone and definition in your abs muscles and stomach area.  Also look for an increased tone in the muscles in your arms and legs.

Celebrity Fans: Since gaining popularity, the exercise has gained its fair share of devoted celebrity followers including Gwyneth Paltrow, Madonna, and Hilary Duff. Jennifer Aniston is also a fan of the exercise regimen.

I’m a Pilates person,” Jennifer Aniston said. “It’s great…I had a chronic back, a pinched nerve and a hip problem and it’s completely solved all of it. I love it. It makes me feel like I’m taller.”

Also a fan is Jamie Lee Curtis, who says the exercise is what she counts on to keep fit. “Pilates is the only exercise program that has changed my body,” said Curtis. “And made me feel great.”

Pilates Fashion: One of the most important things to remember when dressing for Pilates is that the ability to move around is the key to this exercise form. However, wear something too loose and you’ll end up either tripping over the excess fabric or lying uncomfortably on your back with a big ball of spandex poking you as you lay. Often, Yoga clothes can be a good choice for your Pilates workout. The fabric allows them to stretch, but still remain well fitted. Checkout Victoria’s Secret’s full array of Yoga Pants for a cute look that won’t break the bank.  The serious Pilates fan should also take a look into buying no-slip socks. With their functionality and out of control comfort, these toe socks can keep you balanced both in and out of the gym.
