One of the upcoming season’s biggest trends is the accordion pleat skirt. We recently saw this chic look on Gossip Girl Star, Blake Lively, and we think this trend is one that will not only be a spring hit, but last well into next fall. Many celebrities have been spotted in this chic, flowing skirt, and the look has been seen on many a runway already.
Designers such as Christopher Kane, Gucci, Valentino and Tory Burch have shown these skirts in metallics, chiffons, and prints. Some affordable brands have released skirts in this style as well. Old Navy, H&M and Forever 21 have been selling and styling these super chic skirts for those of you on a tighter budget, with runway taste.
This type of skirt is so full and flirty that it can be hard to style, but with the right tips, you can have that flawless runway look in seconds. First things first, if you’re going with a bright, metallic, or printed skirt, keep the rest of your ensemble plain and simple. A crisp white or black shirt, and black pumps or flats are all you need.
The waistband of the skirt should fit slightly low-slung. This will define your waist and hips, as well as balance out the layers of fabric in the flowing skirt. The hem needs to fall a couple of inches above the knee so that you can show off those great legs, and a full skirt always makes your legs look thinner. The fullness of the pleat doesn’t really matter, but don’t pick a fabric that is too overwhelming or your shape. These skirts usually come on soft materials, so if it is made with anything other than silk or chiffon, stay away. This type of skirt will not look good if you wear it in a stiff material. We love this look dressed up and dressed down, and we can’t wait to see what these skirts bring us in the season to come.
