It’s an understood, unsaid rule that New York Fashion Week is guaranteed to bring us a few showstopping surprises. This time around, Alexander Wang turned up the power for his latest fall collection with edgy cuts, strong silhouettes, a lot of black, and gave us that authentic “rocker-glam” feeling.
Wang’s collection, completely taking over the RKO Hamilton Theater on the corner of Broadway and 146th Street, was presented in a half-rock-show-half-runway kind of way – that truthfully, only he could pull off. The show paired a number of menswear-inspired pieces, highlighting oversized coats in different lengths and a classic cropped denim jacket, with more feminine pieces such as ruffled skirts, bell sleeves, and statement accessories in silver. A new surge of Western wear (i.e. cowboy-friendly fringes) influences have found their way into a number of collections this season, appearing in Wang’s collection in the form of fringed tops and neckwear.
Layering was played up in this show, with denim jackets worn under heavy coats, shorts over leggings and denim, and leather vests over bell sleeve tops. High-waisted bottoms, printed legwear, and a few see-through moments were a common occurrence on this runway. To hype up the grunge aesthetic, models were seen in studded footwear, ranging from combat boots to pumps, dark makeup, and were sporting that just-got-out-of-bead shaggy hair look. A few new handbags appeared on the runway, as well as a few pieces in a gray, tartan pattern to give relief to the almost exclusively black collection.
Bella Hadid and Kendall Jenner were both spotted on the Wang runway among a number of notable favorites like Cara Taylor, Yasmin Wijnaldum, and Mica Arganaraz. The models turned struts to stomps as they stormed around the raised runway keeping in beat with the shows mood-boosting track (that we plan to add to our playlist ASAP). Though “No After Party” was the battle cry for the collection, appearing on t-shirts, leggings, and the campaign for the show, the entire collection encompassed a powerful party girl vibe.
