Rick Wellman’s Tips for Protecting Your Hair All Summer Long

As summer quickly approaches, many people love to spend endless days in the sand and lighten up their hair color for these warmer months. Yes, we’re talking luscious blonde locks; they’re back for the season! It’s never too early to begin protecting your hair from the wear and tear of those unavoidable beach elements.

Celebrity hair colorist, Rick Wellman of Marc Harris Salon is our go-to expert when it comes to protecting your sensitive color all summer long.

Wellman advises you to ask your stylist to to start with a gentler highlighting process. To do this, request Biolights–a cotton pad alternative to the aggressive aluminum–and an ammonia-free lightener. Both methods will give the sun room to naturally lighten locks.

Wellman’s pro tip: Just like your skin, a little bit of sun can add a pop of color; however, an excessive amount can burn and permanently damage your hair.

To avoid the hair harm, “start deep treatments now,” says Wellman. He recommends using the Oribe Gold Lust Transformative Masque once a week to achieve ultimate repair and moisture. For added protection, spray a leave-in conditioner enhanced with SPF in your hair before jumping into salt water or chlorine.

While using a hair mask and leave-in conditioner are fantastic for your hair, you can never go wrong with a trustee hat. This is the best, oh and not to mention, most fashionable protector of all.

If you find yourself out at the pool or beach all day, be sure to follow up with a good shampoo to remove all the salt and chlorine from your hair. This is crucial since salt and chlorine can begin to split up the hair shaft. Trust me, you don’t want to have to spend your time and money repairing your long blonde locks after summer, or worse, have to cut them off.

It’s not too late! Begin protecting your hair now. With the help of a mask, leave-in conditioner, or hat, you’re on your way to endless worry-free beach days.
