Runway Style The Reemergence of the Extreme Side-Part

sidepart1Last Thursday, New York’s Fashion Week came to a close, and along with the many fashion trends that debuted on the runway, backstage beauty experts highlight the extreme side-part as one of this year’s leading trends. The side-part sprung up in a variety of looks from the feminine ponytail in DKNY and Jason Wu’s shows, to borderline androgynous styles at Lacoste and Michael Angel.

The stylists drew inspiration for the look from the reoccurring trend in our history.

Lacoste and Angel referenced the roaring ‘20’s, where flappers wore the look, specifically drawing from idolized character Daisy Buchanan of F. Scott Firtzgerald’s The Great Gatsby.

Other designers mirrored the 1960’s and fashion icon Twiggy’s tendency to sport the trend, often adding giant barrettes or extravagant eyelashes to feminize the sleek look.

Narcisco Rodriguez utilized a look that let the side-part give way to long, straight glossy hair, inspired by the 1990’s Caroline Bisette Kennedy’s silky blonde hair often worn down in an extreme side-part.  Rodriguez worked with hairstylist Eugene Souleiman and created a look that they loved for its ability to uniform the models in the fashion show. “I chose a simple hairstyle that would unify all the girls so that they looked exactly the same,” said Souleiman.

The extreme side part looks best worn with a bold lip – either in

a classic red or a deep wine color for fall – a touch of mascara and a natural, clean complexion.
