The Right Way to Wear White After Labor Day

Next time someone tells you not to wear white after labor day just turn the other cheek. Style experts share advice on how to incorporate whites into your wardrobe this fall and winter season.

Fashion Expert Charla Krupp thinks you should be wearing white all year long, ‘especially if you live in a seasonless climate.’

As it gets colder and the weather calls for heavier clothing, Krupp believes white sweaters are always a good thing. She also thinks wearing a white coat can help you stand out amidst the standard dark coats.

Change the fabric, transform the look

Changing the fabric of the white colored clothing item is key when transitioning from summer to winter. Style Expert Heather Kenny wants you to put those linen dresses and tissue-thin cotton tops in storage and replace them with crisp white shirts and white dresses made of heavier-weight materials.

“White needs a little bit more substance in fall. Those wispy white separates will just look wrong in the golden autumn light and the back-to-school mentality, Kenny told StyleList. “You could still wear a light top under a jacket or cardigan though.”

Mix and Match

White can be layered and mixed and matched to coordinate with the season. In the fall combine whites with deep fall colors such as burgundy or earth tones. Pair a cool suede or leather jacket with your favorite summer whites or a pair of boots with a white summer dress.

Or take Kenny’s advice and go all white with wool pants and a cashmere turtleneck, a look called winter white that she says looks incredibly luxurious.

It is always safe to match black and white for a classically chic look at any time.

When in doubt, go nude

According to the fashion experts, there are a few fashion faux pas that you should stay away from.

Kenny advises to wear nude colored shoes to make your legs look leaner and longer and never to wear white shoes, even in sneakers unless you want to look ‘nerdy’.

White undergarments is another common fashion mistake. Underwear and bras should match the color of your skin tone to hide those embarrassing bra and panty lines. According to Krupp, Nude is better than white, especially under a white tee. She wonders why white is the most popular bra color, as it should be nude.
