How to Wear Mix & Match Color

A big trend on the runway earlier this year was a style termed color blocking. Color blocking is the art of strategically pairing bright colored clothing together in a complementary fashion. Your bright pieces can be layered on over one another, or simple pieces paired together, like a neon pink blazer and blinding red pant. The girl shown above top left may look like she’s from another planet, but that doesn’t meancolor blocking is a far-fetched trend for off the runway. It may be a tad more difficult to pull off at work, but its completely doable–just check out Camilla Belle. As you can see, the colors don’t have to be extremely vibrant, but they must be solid colors–no patterns allowed here! When deciding to pair together colors, remember that colors look best when they stay within their respective family. Blues go with cool colors like purple and green, while pinks tend to work better with hot colors: orange, red, or yellow. That doesn’t mean you should shy away from pairing colors from both hot and cool families. As you can see, Camilla worked green with purple and orange really well. One way to make sure you don’t leave the house looking like you dressed yourself in the dark is to keep the cool colors bright when paired with hot colors. For example, Kat Thomsen paired her red and purple outfit with a pair of heels with a touch of bright neon blue.
